3 Signs Your Child Needs Braces

Braces are a common orthodontic treatment that can help straighten teeth and improve your child’s smile. According to Mouthhealthy.org, your child’s first dental appointment should occur after their first tooth emerges, but not later than the first birthday. If you’re unsure if your child needs braces, here are three signs to look out for.

1. Crowding or Gaps in Teeth

Crowding occurs when there is not enough space for all teeth to fit comfortably within the jaw. This sign can cause teeth to become crooked and difficult to clean, increasing your child’s risk for cavities. On the other hand, gaps in teeth may lead to speech problems and can also be difficult to clean.

Both overcrowding and gaps in teeth are corrected with braces. In some cases, your child may also need to wear a retainer after treatment is complete to maintain the results.

2. Misaligned Teeth

Another common sign that your child may need braces is misaligned teeth. When the teeth are out of alignment, they can be difficult to clean and put extra strain on the gums and jawbone. This issue can lead to several dental problems down the road, including tooth decay, gum disease, and even loss of teeth.

Orthodontic treatment can correct misaligned teeth, leading to a healthier smile. In many cases, braces are needed to align the teeth properly. Treatment usually lasts for around two years, and during this time, your child will likely see significant improvements in their oral health.

3. Overbite or Underbite

An overbite is when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth, and an underbite is when the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. Both overbites and underbites can cause several dental issues, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and even bone loss. In addition, overbites can cause problems with chewing and speaking, while underbites can lead to jaw pain and TMJ disorder.

Orthodontic treatment is often the best way to correct an overbite or underbite. Over the course of your child’s treatment, you will soon see significant changes in their bite.

As you can see, there are a number of ways to identify that your child may need braces. If you have any concerns, be sure to talk to a trusted Pembroke Pines orthodontist like Jacaranda Smiles. We can assess your child’s teeth and tell you if orthodontic treatment is right for them.
