What Are the Different Types of Braces Available for Kids?

If your child is scared of getting orthodontic treatment, you can help calm them down by telling them what to expect. Orthodontic treatment is a type of dental care that corrects orthodontic problems such as crooked teeth, overbites, and underbites. Braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment. With roughly 3.9 million children in the United States receiving orthodontic care, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, it’s incredibly common. If your child needs braces, we will talk you through the different types of braces available to kids.

Let Them Know What to Expect

What to expect during orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. Some people need orthodontic treatment for just a few months, while others may need it for several years.

What Types of Braces Are There?

There are five main types of orthodontic care for kids: braces, Invisalign, ClearCorrect, Damon braces, and lingual braces.

Braces

Braces are the most common type of orthodontic care. They are metal wires that are attached to the teeth to correct orthodontic problems. Braces can be uncomfortable at first, but most people get used to them after a few weeks.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that uses clear plastic aligners to correct minor orthodontic problems. Invisalign is popular because it’s virtually invisible and it’s removable. You can take your aligners out to eat or drink and brush your teeth.

ClearCorrect

ClearCorrect is similar to Invisalign, but it is made from a different type of plastic. It’s also removable and virtually invisible.

Damon Braces

Damon braces are another type of orthodontic treatment that uses wires that are attached to the teeth. Unlike braces, Damon braces don’t require elastics or rubber bands to keep the wires in place. This makes them more comfortable than traditional braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are braces that are attached to the back of the teeth instead of the front. They’re nearly invisible, making them a better choice for people who are concerned about their appearance with braces.

See Your Child’s Orthodontist Regularly

It’s important to care for your child’s braces properly so that they can work their best. If you have any orthodontic emergencies, be sure to call your orthodontist. When your child is finished with orthodontic treatment, it’s important to continue seeing their orthodontist so that they can make sure their teeth stay healthy.

If your child is concerned about their orthodontic treatment, they can be sedated during the application process. Sedation can help keep your child calm and relaxed during orthodontic treatment. Sedation is a good option for people who are scared of getting braces or who find orthodontic treatment uncomfortable.
