How Do Braces Work?

Braces are quite common nowadays even for adults. These devices are used to correct teeth and jaw alignment issues. To learn more about how braces work to help achieve straight teeth, be sure to keep reading.

How Braces Move Teeth

Most people understand that braces can fix overcrowded teeth, but they are not aware of how these devices achieve this. Braces correct tooth alignment issues by applying constant pressure on them for long periods.

The shape of your jaw gradually adapts in response to this pressure, which is how you end up with straight teeth. Once people hear the word “pressure,” it can be tempting to think that braces are painful. However, that is not the case at all. While you might experience a bit of soreness during the first week of having them, this will eventually go away.

How Long Does One Have to Wear Braces Until They Have Straight Teeth?

Unfortunately, there is no single answer to this question. This is because the duration of braces will depend on what problem is being addressed. You will also need to consider the severity of the issue being addressed. Apart from that, the amount of room in your mouth will also contribute to the length of time that you will have to wear braces. Lastly, the final contributing factor to the duration of your treatment is the distance your teeth will have to travel.

There are several things you can do to ensure that the duration of treatment doesn’t end up being longer than necessary. For instance, it is important to follow the instructions given by the orthodontist. You must stick to the dietary plan and cleaning instructions so that you don’t end up causing complications that can lengthen the treatment period. On average, if you get braces, you will need to wear them for at least a year.

How to Deal With Soreness Caused by Braces?

If you start experiencing some discomfort because of your braces, you can take some over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If the pain becomes too much, it is advisable to communicate with your orthodontist and arrange an appointment so that they fix the braces.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, it is estimated that 50-75% of people could benefit from orthodontic treatment. The majority of these people can enjoy a better smile, straight teeth, and a confidence boost by getting braces. Fortunately, nowadays, there are several types of braces to choose from, including some that are even considered fashionable.
