2 Important Facts About Overbites

As a parent, you should be aware of taking care of the teething process that your children go through. For some children, their teeth will start to come in as early as 4-6 months, with the first baby tooth coming in around six months. While this may seem like a long time for it to happen, it does not stop the fact that your child is going through what most parents will know as “teething.”

What is an Overbite?

Children will usually have an overbite where the upper jaw can overlap the lower jaw. It may cause a problem as time passes, and parents should be aware of it. For this case, when the baby teeth start to come in, you should take them to an orthodontist for a check-up so that they can address any problems quickly. Here are essential facts you should know about overbites.

Fact 1: Many people with an overbite may have braces or another form of orthodontic treatment. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, aside from aesthetics, an overbite is the second most common reason for braces. The bite will be off-center since one jaw is higher than the other and the jawbone does not sit properly. This will create an overbite problem in which they may need to have braces to make sure their teeth sit correctly.

Fact 2: As a parent, you should keep an eye on your child’s teething. If they begin to overbite, it can lead to issues that may impact their teeth and health. If your child is in the process of being aggressive or unruly, this happening may lead to a lot of problems down the road. Taking care of this issue early enough by making regular appointments with orthodontists is always better than trying to take care of it when your child is older.

The most important thing parents should be aware of when dealing with an overbite is that it is not something that will resolve itself. You need to take your child in for a check-up and see if there is anything they can do about their teeth. Since this is a common problem for children, you should be aware of it so that your child does not experience the same issues you had to deal with.
