Should I have Orthodontic Treatment Delivered to my Doorstep?

Online companies offer a cheap solution for straightening teeth without a visit to a dentist or orthodontist in person. These companies usually have patients take an impression of their teeth using putty and a tray. You mail the impressions back to the company where a dental team examines them and suggests a course of treatment using 3D modeling software. Then the company ships a series of clear aligners for treatment that lasts about 6 months.

It’s a way for patients to save a few bucks on orthodontic treatment, but at what cost? Consider:

• Potential health hazards. You should not begin orthodontic treatment until a dentist clears your teeth and gums. If you have issues like cavities, gingivitis, chipped teeth, etc., a certified orthodontist will ask you to visit your dentist and address these first. You won’t get that kind of personalized interaction from an internet company.
• Lack of patient information. Before you receive orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will take X-rays to make sure you are a good candidate. If the bones or teeth do not look like they would align properly with treatment, another course of care may be suggested, even necessary. None of this background is available to DIY orthodontic providers.
• No checkups. You need to visit a certified orthodontist regularly to ensure everything is moving properly, on schedule and safely. You won’t receive hands-on care from internet orthodontics. The outcome could prove hazardous to your teeth and gums with the potential to do more harm than good.
• Then there’s the fine print. When you get mail-orders braces, you must sign an agreement that says your front teeth may appear straighter, but your back teeth bite may suffer in the process. DIY orthodontic companies don’t consider your complete mouth, jaw and oral health. They only promise to make your teeth look better.
