How important is oral health in children and what is our role as parents?
The foundation for healthy permanent teeth throughout our life is laid during the first years of life. Poor diet and inadequate toothbrushing habits during the first 2 years of life have been shown in several studies to be related to tooth decay in children. The development of cavities in primary teeth further increases the risk of developing caries in permanent teeth.
Therefore, it is paramount to establish a regiment of proper oral health care at home including regular dental visits to ensure the development of strong and healthy teeth. Parents have an important role in implementing this regiment and making sure we are consistent with following oral health care at home. Toothbrushing should be presented as a habit and an integral part of the daily hygiene routine. Children will emulate their parents therefore making them prime role models and centerpieces to oral health.
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and it reminds us of the importance of teaching kids how to care for their teeth. Call us today to set up an appointment with our pediatric dentist, Dr. Rene Landa!
