1-DSC_7527 320After you spend 2 years in a gym working out, you expect to have a very fit and healthy body. The only way to maintain this body is to keep going to the gym even if for a fraction of the time. Otherwise it all goes away…

Think of your teeth the same way.

When you get your retainers, your teeth look fabulous! Now we need to maintain them. The retainer will be there to help keep what we have achieved, while the bone and gums settle in around the new positions.

The retention phase lasts for life! Yes, you read it right—for life. We recommend all of our patients to wear their retainers in the following manner:

-FIRST 2 YEARS- 12 HOURS A DAY (PREFERABLY AT HOME ONLY)

-SECOND 2 YEARS- SLEEP TIME ONLY.

-THIRD 2 YEARS- 6 NIGHTS A WEEK, SLEEP ONLY

Take an additional night off every 2 years. Your retainer must be worn no less than 3 nights a week indefinitely. Remove only when eating, brushing, and drinking – except when drinking water.

Everything in our body changes as we grow older, so your teeth will want to move too. The retainer, if worn consistently, will prevent this shifting. Also, in case your wisdom teeth begin to interfere with the teeth, the retainers can hold them straight. Remember, you have gone through a lot to achieve the smile you have now. Don’t lose it by not wearing the retainers! Of course, remember to keep the retainer clean.

Our standard retainer looks similar to Invisalign®. In some cases, we do prescribe the traditional wire retainers. A permanent retainer may be suggested in cases where we begin with severe crowding or a large gap in between the front teeth.
