Pediatric Dentist | How Often Should My Child Visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a dental check-up at least twice a year for most children with a frequency of every 6 months. Some children need more frequent dental visits because of increased risk of tooth decay, unusual growth patterns or poor oral hygiene.  A number of factors might make it a good idea to see a dentist three or more times a year. People whose diet is rich in sugary foods or drinks should consider more frequent checkups within 6 months.  The majority of people will produce enough tartar in 6 months that it will need to be scraped off by a dental professional.

Dentist vs. Pediatric Dentist?

What is the difference between a dentist and pediatric dentist?

Overall, a pediatric dentist is a dentist that specializes in treating children’s teeth and oral care. A dentist can treat all ages and has patients of all ages, but does not have the particular training that a pediatric dentist does.

A pediatric dentist has specialized training which requires an additional program of study beyond dental school. This specialized program of study and patient care experience prepares the pediatric dentist to meet the unique needs of infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs.

Children have special needs that make them different from adults. Treating teeth is only one facet of what dentists do, taking into consideration the individual is what sets them apart. Children may be more afraid of the experience and require a different approach to allow treatment. Pediatric dentists excel in making children as comfortable as possible in dental environments. This can be accomplished by providing an age appropriate setting, in how they communicate to children or use of sedative medications.

Our pediatric dentist, Dr. Rene Landa, received his specialty training in pediatrics at Boston University. There, he completed extensive training in oral and maxillofacial surgery, complex pediatric dental cases, and sedation dentistry. He enjoys interacting with his young patients and believes that a lifetime of great oral health starts with great care from a young age. As a pediatric dentist, he is dedicated to providing exceptional care and service to our young patients. Together with his staff he strives to deliver optimal oral care in a safe and nurturing environment.

The Importance of Oral Health in Kids

How important is oral health in children and what is our role as parents?

The foundation for healthy permanent teeth throughout our life is laid during the first years of life. Poor diet and inadequate toothbrushing habits during the first 2 years of life have been shown in several studies to be related to tooth decay in children. The development of cavities in primary teeth further increases the risk of developing caries in permanent teeth.

Therefore, it is paramount to establish a regiment of proper oral health care at home including regular dental visits to  ensure the development of strong and healthy teeth.  Parents have an important role in implementing this regiment and making sure we are consistent  with  following  oral health care at home. Toothbrushing should be presented as a habit and an integral part of the daily hygiene routine. Children will emulate their parents therefore making them prime role models and centerpieces to oral health.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and it reminds us of the importance of teaching kids how to care for their teeth. Call us today to set up an appointment with our pediatric dentist, Dr. Rene Landa!

What Are Some Alternatives to Braces?

A tooth does not know what is pushing on it. Therefore, anything that can apply a constant pressure to the tooth would be considered an alternative to braces. The most well known alternative to braces today is probably Invisalign®.

Invisalign uses a series of plastic trays to apply pressure to the teeth. There are many companies that manufacture a product similar to Invisalign. Other alternatives include removable retainers and lingual braces. Both of these use wires to push the teeth.

If you are interested in straightening your teeth or know someone that is, share this article with them! Jacaranda Smiles offers FREE consultations for orthodontic treatment and we offer both traditional braces and alternatives to braces like Invisalign. Dr. Milan Khakhria would love to share your treatment options with you!

How Do You Brush a Baby’s Teeth?

Baby teeth may be small, but they’re important. They act as placeholders for adult teeth, provide what we need to adequately chew our food, and aid in pronunciation. Without a healthy set of baby teeth, your child will have trouble chewing and speaking clearly. That’s why caring for baby teeth and keeping them cavity-free is so important. Oral health care should start before any teeth are even erupted.

1. Get a soft, moistened washcloth or piece of gauze.

2. Gently wipe down your baby’s gums at least twice a day.

3. Especially wipe your baby’s gums after feedings and before bedtime.

Once teeth erupt, or show through the gums, now its time to graduate to a small tooth brush with small head. As soon as teeth erupt, you can start using a small amount of fluoride about the size of a grain of rice. You can increase this to a peas sized amount of fluoride toothpaste when your child is 3 years old.

Brush gently all around your child’s baby teeth — front and back. You should brush your baby’s teeth until he or she is old enough to hold the brush.

Call Jacaranda Smiles today with any questions or to set up your child’s appointment with our pediatric dentist, Dr. Rene. It is recommended that your child see a dentist by age one or when they have their first tooth.
